We take more photographs than ever.

Our phones are full of them. Thousands of little moments, saved automatically, backed up somewhere in the cloud and occasionally rediscovered when the phone reminds us what happened three years ago.

And yet, most of those photographs never leave the screen. I think that is a little strange. Especially when it comes to photographs of our children.

A photograph feels different when you can hold it

There is something about a printed photograph that a screen simply cannot replace.

You can hold it. Put it on a shelf. Frame it on the wall. Open an album years later and find a photograph you had completely forgotten about. A digital file is convenient. A printed photograph becomes part of your home.

This is one of the reasons I include professional print products in my photography experience. I don’t want the photographs we create together to disappear into a folder on someone’s computer. I want them to become something you actually see.

Not every photograph needs to be printed

I don’t believe you need to print every image from your gallery. In fact, choosing a few photographs is part of what makes printed photography special.

Maybe there is one photograph of your newborn that you can’t stop looking at. Perhaps it is the way your baby is sleeping in your arms, or a photograph of all of you together that somehow captures exactly what those first days felt like. That photograph might belong on your wall.

Other images may work better as part of an album, where the photographs can tell a larger story together. And some photographs are simply perfect to keep digitally and share with family. The point isn’t to print everything. It’s to decide which memories deserve a physical place in your life.

Wall art becomes part of your home

There is a reason I love seeing family photographs on walls. A framed photograph isn’t stored away. You see it every day without thinking about it. And children grow so quickly that sometimes it takes a photograph on the wall to remind you just how small they once were.

For newborn photography, I particularly love simple, timeless images as wall art. A close portrait, a photograph of the baby in your arms, or a family photograph with plenty of space around it can become something that still feels beautiful years later. It doesn’t have to look like a traditional baby photograph. It can simply look like your family.

Albums tell a different story

A photograph on the wall captures one moment. An album can hold an entire chapter.

This is why I see albums as something different from wall art. They allow you to combine the little details with the bigger photographs: your baby’s face, tiny hands and feet, photographs with parents, siblings and those quiet moments between the more carefully planned portraits.

Years from now, an album becomes more than a collection of photographs. It becomes a record of who your family was at that particular moment. And I think there is something quite beautiful about the idea that your children will eventually be able to open that book themselves.

The photographs we almost forget about

There is another reason I believe in printing photographs. We tend to remember the obvious ones. The big family portrait. The beautiful close-up. The photograph we immediately choose as our favourite.

But sometimes it is the quieter photograph that becomes meaningful later. A mother’s hand on her baby’s back. A father looking down at his newborn. A sibling touching a tiny foot. A photograph that wasn’t necessarily the most technically perfect image in the gallery, but somehow captured the feeling of that day. These are often the photographs that deserve to exist outside the phone.

What I want for my clients

When I deliver a gallery, I know that digital photographs are important. They are easy to share with grandparents, friends and family. They allow you to keep your memories with you wherever you go.

But I also want to give families the possibility of creating something tangible. Fine-art prints, framed wall art, albums and folio boxes are all designed to give your photographs a life beyond the screen.

Because your children will eventually grow up. The tiny clothes will be packed away. The nursery will change. The first shoes will become too small. But a photograph on the wall will still be there. And one day, your child may look at it and realise just how loved they were from the very beginning. That, for me, is the real value of printing your family photographs. A piece of your family history that you can actually hold.
