There is no single way to photograph a newborn.

Over the years, I have realised that parents don’t all want the same thing. Some arrive with a very clear picture in their head: beautifully posed baby portraits, soft wraps, carefully chosen props and those tiny curled-up poses that immediately make you think, “newborn photography.”

Others want something much quieter. They want to remember how small their baby was in their arms, the way those tiny fingers held onto theirs, the expressions, the connection and all those little details that are so easy to forget once the first weeks have passed.

Neither approach is better. They simply tell the story differently. That is why I offer two newborn photography styles: Classic Newborn and Natural Simple.

Classic Newborn Photography

Classic newborn photography is the style most people probably imagine when they hear the words “newborn photoshoot.”

The baby is carefully posed and photographed individually, often using wraps, fabrics, props and different styled setups. We can create several different looks while keeping the whole gallery soft and cohesive.

This style works particularly well during the first 5–14 days, when many newborns naturally curl up and are more comfortable being gently positioned.

I love the variety that this style allows. One photograph might be very simple, with just your baby’s face and soft light. Another might include a beautiful prop or a carefully chosen wrap. We can change the setup, but the baby always remains the centre of the photograph.

There is also plenty of room for family photographs. Parents and siblings are an important part of the session, even when the main focus is on beautifully posed portraits of the baby. For families who have always dreamed of that classic newborn gallery, this style gives us the opportunity to create those photographs.

Natural Simple Newborn Photography

Natural Simple is quite different. There are fewer props, less styling and much less emphasis on posing the baby into a particular position. I usually work with simple white or cream backgrounds, soft fabrics and natural light or carefully controlled soft light.

Instead of trying to create a particular pose, we allow more space for what is naturally happening. Your baby lying quietly. A tiny hand resting against your chest. The way your partner holds those impossibly small feet. A sibling looking at the new baby for the first time.

These photographs are often much more about connection than perfection. The baby is still the centre of the story, but the family becomes much more present in the photographs.

Natural Simple can work beautifully from birth to approximately one month, so it is also a wonderful option for families who haven’t managed to arrange their session during the first two weeks.

So which style should you choose?

Usually, the answer is already hidden in the photographs you are naturally drawn to.

If you look through a newborn photographer’s portfolio and immediately notice the beautifully posed baby portraits, styled setups, wraps and props, you will probably feel more at home with the Classic Newborn approach.

If you find yourself stopping at photographs of parents holding their baby, tiny details, simple backgrounds and genuine expressions, Natural Simple may be closer to what you imagine for your own family. And sometimes you simply don’t know. That’s completely fine.

The two styles have the same session fee and the same digital image collections. The difference is simply how we photograph your baby and what we put at the centre of the story.

What I have learned after photographing so many newborns

Earlier in my career, I was much more focused on getting the pose right.

And posing is still an important part of newborn photography. But after more than a decade of photographing babies, I have become much more interested in everything that happens around the pose. How the baby feels. How the parents interact with the baby. Where the light falls. Whether the image will still feel beautiful ten years from now. Whether the gallery tells a story rather than simply showing a collection of different poses.

That is probably why I don’t think of Classic Newborn and Natural Simple as two completely separate types of photography. They are two different ways of looking at the same thing. A newborn is only this tiny once. My job is not to make every baby look the same. My job is to create photographs that feel like your baby, your family and your particular beginning together.

And sometimes that means a beautifully posed portrait in a carefully chosen setup. Sometimes it means a photograph of your baby sleeping on your chest. Usually, it means knowing when to create the first and when to step back and let the second happen.
