One of the first things parents often start thinking about before a newborn photoshoot is what their baby should wear. It makes sense. There are so many beautiful newborn outfits that it is very easy to start shopping for tiny clothes that your baby may only wear once.

But you really don’t need to buy anything special for your newborn photography session.

I provide the wraps, fabrics, newborn outfits and styling pieces we use during the session. What we choose depends on your baby’s age, the style you have selected and the overall feeling we want the photographs to have.

For me, the clothing should always support the photograph rather than become the photograph. A newborn is already incredibly detailed and expressive. Tiny fingers, soft skin, a sleepy face and the way a baby curls into their parent’s arms don’t need much decoration.

If you choose Classic Newborn photography, there is more room for styling. We can use different wraps, outfits and props to create several carefully designed setups. Your baby may be photographed in different poses and combinations of colours and textures, while still keeping the gallery visually connected.

I don’t believe in using as many props as possible just because they are available. A good newborn photograph doesn’t need a complicated setup. The styling should make the image stronger, not distract from the baby.

Natural Simple newborn photography has a very different feeling. Here we usually work with white or cream backgrounds, simple fabrics and minimal styling. There are fewer props and less emphasis on posed photographs of the baby alone. Instead, we give more space to expressions, little details and the relationship between your baby and your family.

For some parents, this is exactly what they have been looking for. They don’t necessarily want a collection of elaborate newborn portraits. They want to remember how their baby looked in their arms, how tiny those hands were and what those first days together actually felt like.

What parents wear is just as important as what the baby wears, particularly if you are planning family photographs. I usually recommend simple clothing in neutral or muted colours. Cream, beige, warm white, soft grey and earthy tones work beautifully because they are timeless and don’t compete with the people in the photograph.

You don’t have to match your partner or your children. I actually prefer families to coordinate rather than look identical. Choosing a few colours and textures that work together usually creates a much more natural result.

If you’re unsure about your outfit, we can talk about it before the session. It is much easier to make those decisions in advance than to arrive at the studio with several bags of clothes and still wonder what everyone should wear.

You can also bring something personal if there is an item you would like to include. Perhaps it is a knitted blanket made by a grandparent, a special newborn outfit or something that has been kept in your family. It doesn’t have to appear in every photograph. Sometimes one small detail is enough to give the images a connection to your family’s own story.

And when it comes to your baby’s clothes, I would always choose comfort over appearance. Your baby doesn’t need an elaborate outfit to look beautiful in photographs. In many cases, the simplest styling creates the photographs that age the best.

Years from now, you probably won’t remember whether your baby was wearing the most fashionable newborn outfit of 2026. You will remember those tiny feet. The little face. The way your baby fitted into your hands. That’s what I want the photographs to preserve.
